Freda was born in Wetaskiwin on December 14, 1924 and was the eldest daughter of Conrad and Clara Leinweber. She had one sister Mary (Ganske) and was predeceased by her baby sister Margaret. She grew up on a farm one mile west of the Wetaskiwin Golf Course. As the eldest, she had to help with farm work. Life was not easy but there was time for play with the many neighborhood kids.
She told many stories of the fun times they had. At 16 she met the love of her life Ed Schatschneider from the Brightview area. They were married on January 16, 1945 at the Emmanus Lutheran Church, Brightview.. The church was always a vital part of Freda's life. Guiding her as she married, had children and faced life's challenges.
Her married years consisted of a mixed farming operation, raising children, household responsibilities, helping with the livestock business and in the later years, operating and maintaining several rental properties. She also worked out of the home at several different jobs throughout her life with the fondest being her days at Beneche's Bakery and Klaus Cleaners in Wetaskiwin.
Lifelong friendships were formed at both these places. Regardless of what was going on Freda could always be found working alongside her husband in their many endeavors. In her retirement she worked doing alterations for a local business and others. She also loved having the occasional garage sale or two.
After her husband passed in 1996, Freda took to making quilts. She was an excellent quilt maker, making close to a hundred quilts for all the kids, grandchildren and great grandchildren. In May of 2018 she moved into Peace Hills Lodge where she enjoyed some much deserved pampering.
She was a devoted wife, a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Freda was always busy and enjoyed life and the blessings that she was surrounded with. She was a kind and gentle soul having many lifelong friendships. Never one to complain, she took life's challenges as they came. She always had a positive attitude and was ready to give and help anyone however she could. Her kind heart made her an excellent lister and she would sit and listen to anyone as long as needed. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
A service was held at Baker Funeral Chapel on January 11, 2021 at 1 pm. Donations in Freda's memory can be made to the Zion Lutheran Church (5417 40 Ave, Wetaskiwin, AB T9A 0A7).
