April 9, 1933 - December 1, 2024
In loving memory ~
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Gert Hartwig announces his passing on December 1, 2024, at the age of 91 after a brave battle with cancer. He will be forever remembered by his sister Renate (Rezsoe); son Hardy (Marcie); daughters Mona (Scott), and Rita (Thorsten); grandchildren Ty (Angie), Alia (Colden), Peter, Georgia; and great-granddaughter Emma.
Born in Littschen, Germany, Gert apprenticed as a tool & die maker before leaving for Canada at the age of 20. His mechanical aptitude and creativity lent to an accomplished career in the design and manufacturing of farm machinery. Living on the farm gave him an outlet for his passions; farming, building the next project, and tending to his garden and the chickens. It was his heaven on earth. Gert combined a tireless work ethic and uncompromising integrity with a gentleness and warm sense of humour.
Our sincere gratitude to his incredible friends and neighbors who assisted him these last years, clearing snow from his yard, driving him to numerous medical appointments, and stopping by to visit or watch the hockey game. He was so grateful. The family would also like to express our appreciation for the wonderful staff of Unit 33 at the Wetaskiwin Hospital. In particular, thank you nurse "Smiley" for always taking the extra time to make Gert smile.
A celebration of Gert's life will be held at 2:00pm on Wednesday, January 8, 2025 at the Wetaskiwin Seniors Centre, 5216-54 St.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Gert's honor may be made to the Wetaskiwin Medi Lend Society or the Cross Cancer Institute.
