Samuel Steinke was born to Gustav and Martha Steinke at his home near Beiseker, Alberta.
When Sam was nine years old, the family of seven moved to the Millet area in 1930. As he grew up, he spent much time working with his father—learning to farm, drill wells and be resourceful in making things work.

In time they welcomed a son-in-law, Reg, and two daughters-in-law, Linda and Jody. Next came eight grand-children, fifteen great-grandchildren and many foster children.
