OPINION: It’s a blue Christmas for some people

Whether you are getting ready for the holidays or not, it’s important to remember something. Not everyone around us is going to have a happy Christmas. Some people are going to be spending it with loved ones, whether that be their children, significant others or extended family, but others aren’t so lucky. My heart truly goes out to them.

Whether you are getting ready for the holidays or not, it’s important to remember something. Not everyone around us is going to have a happy Christmas. Some people are going to be spending it with loved ones, whether that be their children, significant others or extended family, but others aren’t so lucky. My heart truly goes out to them.

Christmas has always been my most favourite time of the year. I even like the hustle and bustle of the malls. Now that I’ve been blessed with two beautiful children, I get to relive the magic of it all through their eyes, but I can’t help but think of others who are going through a hard time.

The winter months are long in Alberta and just in general. With that comes seasonal depression for some and with that comes the dread of the holidays. Thanksgiving is done, so people now have to try and get through Christmas.

I’ve always counted my lucky stars to have gotten to spend every year surrounded by family. It’s truly what makes my world spin round.

These past few years, especially with the global pandemic putting a strain on travel and whatnot, have been tough to say the least. Being from Ontario, it has been tough to make the trip back home and unfortunately I won’t get to see my family back home for Christmas this year, but I’m still extremely grateful that I get to spend it with my own family here, including my incredible husband, two young boys under three and my husband’s family, who have truly taken me in as their own. I’m proud to call them my family too.

I do feel for those who may not have any family to spend Christmas with or who have lost someone close to them recently. It’s definitely a tough time of year for some and I hope those people are able to call someone or go somewhere that means something to them.

From the bottom of my heart I hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas. Be kind to yourself and be kind to others always, but especially leading up to this difficult time. You truly never know what people are going through.
