The Wetaskiwin Art and Craft Centre’s (WAACC) fall classes are now open for registration.
The centre currently has 25 classes open for registration this season, including Introduction to Fused Glass, Soapstone Carving, Children’s Watercolour for ages eight to 10, Beginner Weaving, Beginners Pottery and more.
In previous years, the stained glass and poetry classes were a major hit, according to WAACC president Kathy Leith. She says it is important to register sooner than later, as limited spacing means classes may fill quickly, and while you can ask to join a waitlist, it is not a guaranteed entry.
“Say, for pottery, there are only so many spots because we only have so many wheels. So, once that’s full, that’s it,” said Leith.
Another unique class offered teaches registrants linocut printmaking, made from a sheet of linoleum into which a design is cut in relief. Both children and adult classes are available.
“Pat Neden is our instructor, and she introduced us to the world of linocut printmaking. And so the kids, we’ve run a few classes with that last year, and they’ve made their own cards to sell for themselves. So they carve out of a lino tile; first, they draw their picture, then they carve their picture, then they use the press, and they create their own cards,” said Leith.
Leith says she hopes to encourage more community members to try new skills at the centre.
“We’re kind of a hidden gem, and when people come in, they don’t realize the extent of our facility,” she said.
As classes become available, they get added to the WAACC website.
