The long-awaited sequel to the Wetaskiwin Composite High School (WCHS) 60s reunion in 2017 was a major success, with 307 attendees.

Taking place on Aug. 11 to 13, graduates from the classes of 1958 to 1972 flocked from around the globe to meet up with former classmates and see the area they once called home.

While some guests were local Wetaskiwin residents, others came from across Canada, the United States and even Australia.

“We’ve had nothing but positive comments. Everybody that was there had a wonderful time, and they were able to reconnect with people they hadn’t seen for years, and the comments have been fabulous,” said Sandy Wright, the president of the planning committee.

The reunion took place at Wetaskiwin’s Co-op Place, formerly the Civic Centre: Twin Arenas and Drill Hall.

The weekend began with a reception on Aug. 11 from 7 p.m. to midnight, complete with light refreshments at the cash bar.

Saturday morning (Aug. 12) saw the coffee ‘Meet, Greet & Eat’ from 9 a.m. to noon, followed by tours of WCHS and Wetaskiwin Museum displays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The day ended with a banquet and dance from 5 p.m. to midnight.

“There were a lot of people on the dance floor the whole time. The only time it was empty was when the band had their break,” said Wright.

“When the band quit, everybody was upset they were quitting.”

The festivities finished on Aug. 13 with a pancake breakfast from 9 a.m. to noon.

Everyone enjoyed themselves so much that they did not want to see the reunion end, according to Wright.

“It was really hard to get people to leave on the Sunday. Nobody wanted to go.”
