The Wetaskiwin Seniors Activity Centre got into the Christmas spirit with its annual cookie walk and craft sale on Nov. 18.

The event, which ran from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., saw major success, selling out of cookies by 1 p.m.

“It went fantastic,” said Seniors Centre facility manager Christine Kison.

“We just have to give a huge shout out to the volunteers because without them we can’t put on the event, and we would not be having that many cookies coming in,” she said.

Guests enjoyed filling their purchased cookie tins with the treats of their choice. Crafts, door prizes and snacks were also available.

As the centre’s main fundraising event, preparation take place year-round, from making arrangements for cookies and tins to the centre’s craft group preparing their creations.

Kison said cookie collection starts about a week before the event. Made by local seniors and volunteers, the sweet treats are stored in freezers until the fundraiser. Six or seven tables are lined with cookies and restocked until they run out.

“The seniors, they do a lot of baking and then they’ll start bringing (cookies) in, and then we put them in the freezer and we also have to use other people’s freezers too,” said Kison.

“I always start panicking about a month before, so the beginning of November. I’m panicking because we’re not going to get enough cookies and then all these cookies come in and I have nowhere (for) them all.”

Kison said the goal is to get a walk-in freezer to make storing cookies easier for the centre in future years.
