Leduc’s fire chief was honoured for his long years of service in Alberta last week. During the City of Leduc’s June 9 council meeting, Deputy Mayor Glen Finstand presented Chief Ernie Polsom with the Fire Services Exemplary Service Medal for 30 years of service in the province.
The medal was created in 1985 to honour the service and commitment of all full-time and volunteer firefighters in Canada.
Originally from Manitoba, Polsom became the director of Emergency Services in Taber before moving to the Alberta Fire Commissioner’s office in 2002 as the Assistant Fire Commissioner. During his time there he held the position Acting Fire Commissioner and director of Field Operations for the Alberta Emergency Management Agency. In 2009 he joined the Leduc Fire Dept.
“As a key leader of the Leduc Fire Services Team, Chief Polsom is recognized as one of those individuals whose service, professionalism and leadership have been exemplary in saving lives and property in the City of Leduc,” said Finstad.
“I can think of nowhere I’d want to receive this more,” said Polsom.
A number of Polsom’s family were on hand to see him not only receive his award but also to watch him present a token of appreciation to his wife from the Province.
“The fire chief recognized a long time ago that you can’t do this job without the support of your spouse and family,” said Polsom.
