Saturday Feb. 26, 2022, Pipestone Community members gathered at the Pipestone Community skating rink for postponed Family Day festivities. The community event, originally scheduled for Family Day weekend was pushed to the following weekend to hold out for better weather.

At the event, members of the Pipestone Community Society announced the new name for the skating rink: the Lorentz-Pockrant Community Rink.

The name was chosen to recognize the work that Dan Lorentz and his son-in-law Dave Pockrant have put into the community rink through the years.

Starting in the 1960’s Lorentz had volunteered his time to upkeep the ice at the Pipestone Rink. Pockrant followed his father-in-law’s lead and took over rink duties in the early 2000’s.

Mavis Lorentz accepted a plaque and was present at the naming presentation on behalf of her late husband Dan. After working on the ice diligently for the days leading up to the community event with other rink volunteers to ensure the ice was ready to go for Saturday, Pockrant was also present to accept the recognition and see the new sign go up on the rink.

Community members enjoyed the fair weathered February night with skating, hot dog making, and a firework show.
