Schuhplatters & Oompah Music: Warburg Oktoberfest This Saturday

Pipestone Flyer

How about this for a Saturday night getaway; a trip to Germany without the jet lag? That’s just what you will experience at the upcoming ‘Oktoberfest in November’ at the Warburg Community Hall on November 8, 2014. Warburg Cultural Society (WCS) will be hosting the event.

According to WCS President Linda McLaughlan, this is the second culturally themed fundraiser for WCS, “Last year, we held a Polish Christmas fundraiser. People really enjoyed themselves. This year, we are focusing on Germany. Families and companies use the event to celebrate anniversaries, birthday and even their Christmas parties.” It is excellent value and it’s going for a great cause. This is a major fundraiser for the Warburg Cultural Centre with the proceeds going towards much needed repairs and upgrades. There will be a live auction too.

Given the cultural ambiance of the event, McLaughlan promises that it will seem like you really are in Germany. Watch the unique shoe sole slappers dance as the Bavarian Schuhplatters of Edmonton provide entertainment, tap your toe to traditional Oompah music. Of course, what would any self-respecting Oktoberfest be without traditional German beer and an authentic Bavarian and German meal? Mr. Oktoberfest himself will be the MC. Why not dress up in Lederhosen or a dirndl? Oh, and if you’re wondering how to say “Cheers” in German when hoisting a mug of brew, simply say, “Prost!” or, “Zum Wohl!”

The Warburg Cultural Centre

For over seventy years, St. Charles Roman Catholic Church, located in the heart of Warburg, served the community as a vital centre for worship, life celebrations, and for expressions of sorrow. The lovely park-like grounds surrounding the light blue building have served as a place for both quiet meditation and delightful photo ops for graduating high schoolers and wedding parties. When the church members learned the disheartening news that the building would be closed and sold in 2005 due to lack of a priest, a great number of them expressed the desire that the building instead be repurposed in order to benefit of the entire community.

The beloved church was decommissioned and the church and grounds were purchased by Gene Begg in order to secure it for the community. Begg then invited the community to have its say on how to repurpose the building. Based on the identified needs of Warburg citizens, a core group of community members formed the Warburg Cultural Society, incorporated on June 20, 2007. Thanks to Begg’s benevolence the WCS has become a leader of arts and cultural organizations and events in Warburg and surrounding area and now owns the building and grounds. WCS is currently looking for a large sponsor to help completely finish the Warburg Cultural Centre in order to move ahead with the WCS objectives of bringing more arts and culture to the community.
