Following a lengthy investigation, on May 14, 2021, Drayton Valley RCMP General Investigation Section (GIS) arrested two individuals and executed search warrants at two residences in Drayton Valley associated to drug trafficking. GIS was assisted by the Drayton Valley RCMP with the investigation and arrests.
During the search of the residences, police seized what is believed to be 72 grams of Fentanyl, 124 grams of Methamphetamine, eight grams of Cocaine, Psilocybin (mushrooms), Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD), and pepper spray.
Both Stephen Craig Spurrell, 37, and Jamie Anne Befus, 23, of Drayton Valley have been charged with:
• Possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking (x3);
• Possession of a controlled substance (x2);
• Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose;
• Possession of proceeds of crime.
Following judicial hearings both Spurrell and Befus were released from custody and are scheduled to appear in Drayton Valley Provincial Court on June 15, 2021.
“The opioid crisis in Alberta continues with Alberta communities seeing a record number of fatal fentanyl overdoses in the first couple of months of 2021 alone,” says Cpl. Ryan Hoetmer, NCOi/c of Drayton Valley RCMP GIS. “Drayton Valley is not immune to this crisis and as police, we see the destruction that fentanyl addiction has on our community. We as a police force are dedicated to taking enforcement action against anyone who chooses to profit off the sale of this deadly product.”
