On June 10, over 25 walkers took to the pavement at Mulhurst Bay for the annual Mulhurst Bay Cancer Walk-a-thon.

The 5km walk-a-thon started at the Mulhurst Community Hall and took walkers down the lakeshore with a lunch stop at the legion before winding back to the community hall. The walk is an annual fundraiser for the Alberta Cancer Foundation and the patient comfort fund at the Cross Cancer Institute.

This year the community goal was to raise $2,500 which was exceeded with a total amount of $3,481 raised.

As a retired x-ray technician that spent 17 years working at the Cross Cancer Institute, walk-a-thon organizer Marion Wilson says, “I see patients who are overwhelmed with their diagnosis and this is a way to help them.”

The patient comfort fund goes towards helping cancer patients with their needs outside of their treatment including if someone needs to pay for a ride, accommodations closer to the hospital, a babysitter for their children, and more.

Wilson says that residents from all over Pigeon Lake came out to support the cause and even if they couldn’t join the walk themselves they stood and cheered the walkers on.
