Red light and speed infractions will be enforced and ticketed at the intersection of 40 Ave and 56 Street in Wetaskiwin starting April 15, 2021.
The red light cameras were installed in response to safety concerns and motor vehicle collision trends in the area. The contracted automated traffic enforcement service provider to the city, Redflex Canada, has been working in conjunction with the Government of Alberta to test and approve the installed cameras.
The installed cameras at 40 Ave 56 Street will be used to enforce both red light and speed-on-green infractions. A typical fine for a red light infraction is $405 and speed fines would be dependent on the vehicle speed recorded as it proceeds through the intersection.
“The City of Wetaskiwin is committed to community safety and this project will help to address safety concerns while reducing both the number and severity of future motor vehicle collisions in the area,” said Paul Edginton, General Manager of Community & Protective Services.
Two other intersections in Wetaskiwin are also being considered for this type of enforcement. These intersections include 40 Ave and 53 Street, and 56 Street and 50 Ave.
Revenue collected from fines within the City of Wetaskiwin is specifically allocated for traffic safety initiatives such as safer pedestrian crossings, intersection safety incentives, improved signage throughout the city and other safety initiatives approved by City Council.
