The Wetaskiwin Elite Hoopers Society (WEHoopS) opened its 2023 Winter League on Nov. 19.

Eight teams participated in the opener at Clear Vista School.

Held in collaboration with the Wetaskiwin Filipino Community Foundation, the event aims to provide Filipino basketball teams an opportunity to compete while building sportsmanship skills and community.

“Basketball is a big thing in my country, the Philippines. It is like, most of the people describe it as a religion, it’s part of our culture,” said organizer Chris Mission from WEHoopS.

Mission estimates over 150 people attended the event.

The event began with the national anthem for both Canada and the Philippines, along with players and coaches taking an oath of sportsmanship.

City of Wetaskiwin councillor Gabrielle Blatz and Wetaskiwin Filipino Community Foundation chairman Marlon Penaso attended the opening ceremonies.

“WEHoopS’ mission is to organize and implement comprehensive all-year-round basketball programs that will promote inclusivity and provide a safe and supportive place for basketball enthusiasts, children and teens to go to on weekends or on occasions like tournaments and basketball clinics,” said Mission in an email.

Adding that WEHoopS hosts “programs that encourage camaraderie, passion for the game and sportsmanship.”

The winter league continues until February 2024.
