Wetaskiwin RCMP investigate fatal collision and arrest impaired driver

A 36-year-old man is facing numerous charges including impaired driving causing death.

Wetaskiwin RCMP responded to a serious motor vehicle collision on Sept. 15, 2021, at approximately 4 p.m. The collision took place on Highway 814 at Township Road 470 just north of Wetaskiwin.

After attending the scene, the RCMP’s investigation indicated that an SUV travelling southbound on Highway 814 was struck by a westbound pickup truck which caused the SUV to roll into the ditch. Emergency medical services and fires services also attended the scene.

RCMP collision analyst also attended the scene to assist.

The lone occupant of the SUV, a 62-year-old female driver from New Norway was pronounced dead at the scene. RCMP state the name of the deceased will not be released.

Witnesses of the accident observed the male driver and lone occupant of the pickup truck flee from the scene.

Edmonton RCMP’s Police Dog Service attended to assist Wetaskiwin RCMP in tracking the male.

Collaborating together the male was located and arrested a short distance away. As the result of the investigation Nicholas James Dekelver, 36, of Devon, Alta., is facing several charges.

Dekelver is facing the following charges:

• Operate motor vehicle while impaired causing death;

• Dangerous Operation of motor vehicle causing death;

• Criminal negligence causing death;

• Failure to stop after accident resulting in death;

• Operate motor vehicle while prohibited;

• Flight from Police;

• Possession of stolen property over $5000;

• Resist arrest;

• Possession of methamphetamine;

• Drive without insurance.

Dekelver was brought before a Justice of the Peace and was remanded to appear in court in Wetaskiwin on Sept. 23, 2021.
