As of Sept. 29, the Wetaskiwin Recycling Centre will no longer be accepting glass recycling and the bin for glass collection will be removed from the site.

City council directed the action following the regular Aug. 22, meeting as the city’s first step in a long-term plan to revamp its waste management programs. During this meeting council also passed a motion directing administration to investigate contracting landfill services.

General manager of municipal services Kathy Lewin states that the removal of glass recycling from the recycling centre comes from a current limited market for glass recycling. She says that glass from the recycling centre was being transported to the landfill so in order to cut out the middle step, city residents can put their glass in their blue/grey bin as part of their regular garbage pickup.

“It’s important to note that we’re not removing a service that was there before but instead removing an inefficiency,” says Lewin.

Moving forward the city will be issuing and Expression of Interest notice to determine community interest in potential contracted waste services opportunities.
