The Wetaskiwin District Heritage Museum Centre Board and Staff hosted the 24th annual Women of Aspenland event on Oct.15.

The Women of Aspenland is a project centered on telling and preserving the stories of special women in the local communities.

It has been two years since the Women of Aspenland event has been able to take place.

This year three notable women who have made unique contributions to the communities of the City of Wetaskiwin, County of Wetaskiwin and Maskwacis were inducted into Women of Aspenland and celebrated.

This year’s inductees included Flora Northwest, Helen Carlson and Nancy Watson.

Northwest is being recognized as an active member in her community as a health representative, community service volunteer, and currently helps her community by spreading awareness of the lasting and generational trauma of the residential school system. Northwest herself is a survivor of residential schools.

Carlson has held numerous volunteer and group positions in her community and says that her greatest passion was her years dedicated to palliative care at the Auxiliary Hospital. She is also involved with the Wetaskiwin-Ashoro exchange program, the Kiwanis Music Festival, Immanuel Anglican Church, Falun Seniors Group, Battle Lake Ladies Group and the Mulhurst Bay Singers.

Watson served as the County of Wetaskiwin’s first female council member and worked as a county councillor for 18 years. She worked to break down barriers and pave the way for future female politicians in the county and community.
