A name may sometimes be just a name, but in the case of Wetaskiwin’s Co-op Place, a name has also signalled a transformative change.
For years, Wetaskiwin visited its Civic Centre: Twin Arenas & Drill Hall – learning to skate, attending community functions and cheering on their favourite teams.
A little over a year ago, with the support of Wetaskiwin Co-op, the centre embraced a bright new future as Co-op Place and Co-op Place Rec Hall, together a vibrant hub of Wetaskiwin’s cultural scene, community activities and special events.
Located at 4513-50th Ave., across from the Manluk Aquatic Centre, Co-op Place is home to various local sports teams and clubs, including the Wetaskiwin Icemen Jr. B Hockey Club, Wetaskiwin Figure Skating Club, Wetaskiwin Minor Hockey and numerous adult teams. Days after donning its new name, Co-op Place also hosted the Alberta Scotties Tournament of Hearts, drawing eyes from across the province to Wetaskiwin.
You’ll also find public skating sessions, lessons and in the Rec Hall, activities like pickleball and weekday walking groups that keep the community active and connected, no matter the season.

“Co-op Place will continue to be where our kids learn to skate and play hockey, where they chase the dream of playing in the NHL or representing Canada in Olympic figure skating, and our community comes together to host tournaments and events of all sizes,” Mayor Tyler Gandam reflected following the ribbon-cutting.
“Wetaskiwin is fortunate to have businesses like Wetaskiwin Co-op who see the value in investing locally and supporting the community.”
This past year, a new tenant has transformed Co-op Place into an even more dynamic destination – especially for hockey fans.
When the Wetaskiwin Longhorns senior AA men’s hockey team announced last July they were choosing Wetaskiwin as their new home, an excited fan base were thrilled, keen to cheer on the hometown favourites in NCHL games against their Central Alberta rivals.
Owned by Canadian country music star and youth advocate Gord Bamford, the team’s arrival signalled a new chapter for Co-op Place, including substantial renovations that benefit locals teams and the greater community.
Players and participants enjoy dressing room upgrades while visitors appreciate enhanced lounge and viewing areas, the addition of bar facilities to accompany the existing concession, and additional welcome details.
