As we welcome the renewal that summer brings, there’s no better time to celebrate Wetaskiwin’s post-pandemic reopening of valuable community resources.

Following three years of COVID-related closures the City is returning more services to pre-pandemic levels.

Here’s a look at what’s happening around town:

On June 10 the City archives reopened, operating under the Wetaskiwin District Heritage Museum Centre.

“We are really looking forward to finally reopening our archives,” said Mayor Tyler Gandam. “We’ve heard very clearly that the community believes the archives are an important part of Wetaskiwin, and we’re excited to now have the right partner in place to help us deliver this service. This has been a long time coming.”

The Heritage Museum will handle all archive activity including completing a full inventory of records, conducting outreach events, promoting the archives via traditional marketing and social media, and regular cleaning and maintenance.

“Wetaskiwin’s collection holds valuable information and stories essential to understanding our history and shared heritage while informing the present and shaping our future. We invite researchers, students, community members, and anyone curious about the past to explore and discover the treasures within the archives,” says Deirdra Cutarm, Wetaskiwin & District Museum Society Vice-president.

Archive inquiries can be made anytime at wdhm@persona.ca, or in-person or by phone from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday. Access to the archive office and documents is by appointment only.

On the recreation front, the Manluk Centre will be returning to pre-COVID Saturday hours this summer. The current hours will expand to 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturdays as of July 8. The return to regular hours had been delayed due to staffing shortages, but thanks to an intensive recruitment campaign things are finally getting back to a pre-pandemic ‘normal.’

“We are really excited to be able to open our doors to Wetaskiwinites seven days a week again and would like to thank the community for their patience and understanding throughout this experience,” says Natasha Grant, the City’s manager of recreation.
