Horse Shot In Wetaskiwin County
During the evening hours of Saturday, November 23rd, 2013, a horse was shot in the Wetaskiwin county. The horse ultimately died because of its injuries. The incident occurred in the area of Highway #611 and Range Road #283.
The owner of the horse, and the land, heard what sounded like a gunshot at approximately 6:30pm. The owner also noted that the location where the horse had been shot would have been accessible only by foot.
This incident would indicate that someone had been hunting at night, on land without permission, and hunting in an area where domesticated animals are kept. Police are asking for the public’s assistance in this matter. Fish and Wildlife, as well as the county of Wetaskiwin, have been notified of the incident. The public is asking to keep watch for any hunting activity that appears suspicious due to hour of the hunting and/or the location of the hunting and report it to either Fish and Wildlife and/or the police.

Break And Enter In Millet
45 Avenue and 49 Street, Millet, AB
Between 10:30 pm on November 24, 2013 and 1:30 pm on November 25, 2013 an unknown number of subjects gained access to a locked compound at the comer of 45 Avenue and 49 Street in Millet, AB. The lock to the gate was cut, a truck was backed into the compound, and a snowmobile was taken.
The snowmobile taken is described as follows:
• 2013 Polaris Pro RMK 800
• VIN - ICG8GS9DC762971
• black in colour with silver and white lettering
• tunnel bag behind the seat
• 350 kilometers on it at the time of theft
• Snowmobile is valued at $15,000
RCMP In Wetaskiwin
Investigate Armed Robbery
On December 2nd, 2013 at 8:23PM, Wetaskiwin RCMP responded to a complaint of an armed robbery at the Gentleman's Liquor Store located at the 4800 block of 50th Avenue, in Wetaskiwin, Alberta. Four persons, all wearing balaclava's, allegedly entered the store demanding money while one suspect produced a weapon. The store employee engaged in a brief struggle with one of the suspects, before the 4 suspects fled the scene with a quantity of liquor. The victim was not hurt during the incident and no cash was stolen.
Approximately one hour before this incident, Hobbema RCMP responded to an armed robbery believed to be related. At 7:17PM, a business in Hobbema was entered by 4 persons wearing balaclava's demanding money. One of the suspects produced a weapon, but the 4 suspects were chased off without obtaining any cash. The suspects fled the scene in what was described as an early 1990's Ford pickup truck that had rear forward opening doors, a sticker in the back window with "truck" in the title, a green sticker on the lower passenger side of the body, scraping type damage on the passenger side. and it had cargo in the box covered by a blanket.
Stolen Property Recovered
Thorsby RCMP are currently investigating a matter where stolen property was recovered in Mulhurst Bay, AB along 50 Ave. Through the investigation a description of two persons of interest has surfaced:
Male #1 - 5’ 10”, white male, 200 – 220 lbs, facial hair (unshaven), and had a lumberjack jacket.
Male #2 - 5’ 10”, white male, skinny build, blue jeans, white hoodie with black patches.
The males were seen between the times of 2:00 – 2:30 am on 2013/11/19 walking eastbound along 50 Ave towards 32 St in Mulhurst Bay, AB.

Break-in at Battle Lake
Unknown suspects broke into a cabin in the Battle Lake area of Wetaskiwin County. The suspects gained entry by forcing a door open causing damage to the cabin.
The suspects went throughout the cabin making a considerable mess while searching. The following items were stolen from the cabin:
• Two fishing poles
• 50" Samsung.. plasma television
• WWIl video gaming system
• Antique 25-20 Winchester rifle
with lever action
• Antique end table
• Approximately $100.00 in
assorted change
• 26 ounce bottle of Aberfeldy
scotch Whiskey
Due to the level of vandalism occurring to rural areas, the public is reminded to take precautions in making your residence or acreage appear less of a target. Do not leave valuables uncovered and/or unlocked. If you intend to leave your residence for a period of time, ensure that your doors are locked and have a friend or neighbour periodically check the status of your residence.
Wetaskiwin Break And Enter Suspect Sentenced
On November 14, 2013, Billy MORIN, 27 years, of Hobbema, Alberta, was sentenced to a total of 9 months and 28 days in jail for charges in relation to two separate investigations conducted by the Wetaskiwin RCMP.
MORIN entered guilty pleas after being arrested in relation to a break and enter to a downtown Wetaskiwin Business which occurred in September of 2012. In this instance, MORIN was charged with one count of break and enter and committing an indictable offence contrary to Section 348(1)(b) of the Criminal Code and one count of brake and enter of Failing to attend court contrary to Section 145(2)(a) of the Criminal Code.
MORIN also entered a guilty plea in relation to an additional break and enter incident to a downtown Business. In September of 2013, MORIN was arrested and charged with possession of property obtained by crime under $5000, contrary to Section 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code.
Truck Stolen In Thorsby
Thorsby RCMP are investigating a theft of a truck that occurred between November 11, 2013 at 1:00am and November 11, 2013 at 10:00am in Warburg, AB. Suspects stole the victims truck and then fled the area. The truck was later located along HWY 622 near HWY 39.
The truck that was stolen and later recovered was a burgundy 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 club cab diesel with a lift kit and newer chrome rims.
To date the investigation suggests a second vehicle, truck, may have assisted the suspect in getting the burgundy 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 club cab diesel mobile from HWY 622 near HWY 39, but may have been startled by others in the area and fled, leaving the stolen vehicle behind.
Leduc Couple Charged With Possession Of Stolen Property
On November 30th, 2013, the Leduc RCMP received a call from a concerned citizen with regards to property being sold on a local media site that may have been obtained from a recent break and enter in Leduc, Alberta.
After a joint investigation by Leduc Municipal and Rural RCMP members it was determined that these Items described were reported stolen to the local authorities earlier this month. Leduc RCMP members obtained a search warrant for the individuals address located in the City of Leduc and seized the stolen items. Leduc RCMP arrested and charged two individuals for Possession of Stolen Property.
• 23 year old Paige REILING of Leduc Alberta, was arrested and charged with:
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime
- Trafficking in Property Obtained by Crime over $5000, X 2
• 23 year old Nicholas JOB of Leduc Alberta, was arrested and charged with:
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime
- Trafficking in Property Obtained by Crime over $5000, X 2
Items Stolen From Truck In Thorsby
Thorsby RCMP are investigating a break and enter of a truck that occurred between November 10, 2013 at 9pm and November 11, 2013 at 11am at the Village Greens Trailer Park in Warburg, AB. Suspects attempted to steal the victims truck and ended up stealing items from the truck.
Beware Of Fraud Schemes
On January 9th, 2014 Thorsby/Breton RCMP received a complaint regarding a possible Fraud Scheme being run in the Thorsby/Breton RCMP Detachment area. Several residents contacted the RCMP to advise that they were contacted by an unknown person who posed as a lawyer, and indicated that a family member was arrested in Quebec for impaired driving and needed monies transferred to them so that they could be released from custody.
RCMP would like to remind people to ensure that the financial dealings that they have are with trustworthy and credible persons or businesses, and that research be completed into the company in the event it is fraudulent. Several recent complaints include, but are not limited to:
- An unknown benefactor has contacted you through email or regular mail advising of a large sum of monies left in an unclaimed estate. These scams request your banking information and/or credit card information so they can transfer the monies, and cover the taxes on the sum of monies. Once the banking information is provided. they then will have access to your bank account or credit card, and will make large sum withdrawals.
- A "representative" from a Lottery corporation contacts you through email advising of your recent Winnings in a lottery that you entered in the past. These schemes request banking information and/or credit card information. If you have won a prize in Canada, there are never fees or taxes to be paid.
- Offering seminars or retreats, then requesting an investment be made. These scams offer a high rate of yearly returns on your investment which are never paid out. These scams request banking information and/or credit card information.
- Unknown persons offer to purchase an item you have for sale on the internet (Kijiji. EBay. etc), and offer a money order to pay for shipping and the item. The money orders are usually well over the requested amount and the scam requests that you cash the money order, and send them a personal cheque with the difference. Your personal cheque is usually cashed before the bank realizes the money order is fraudulent.
- An unknown person(s) contact you on the behalf of family members indicating that they have been arrested and require funds to secure their release. These person(s) ask that you do not contact the parents/siblings of the family member as they are embarrassed, and ask that the funds be transferred by either MoneyGram or Western Union. Once the funds are transferred these person(s) will contact you again, looking for more funds to be wired, usually to pay lawyer fees that have been incurred by the family member.
- If you have NOT LOST MONEY but suspect you have been targeted, contact the Canadian Anti-fraud Center at 1-888-495-8501, or www.antifraudcentre.ca (Formerly known as Phonebusters)
- If you receive a suspicious e-mail soliciting your financial information, advise the bank/agency involved.
- If you are a VICTIM OF FRAUD, contact your local police, and Canadian Anti-fraud Centre.
