Blaine Calkins MP Report

Pipestone Flyer

Entering the House of Commons is always an awesome experience but it is even more exciting and humbling after a General Election.  I am honoured to be your Member of Parliament and I want to assure you that I will work relentlessly to address the challenges that face us, today and in the future.

One of he biggest concerns I heard during my campaign was the current price of gasoline.  Many people were curious as to how the gasoline companies set their prices and what the Government was doing to combat the rising prices at the pumps.  Our government heard these concerns, which is why The Honourable Tony Clement announced that our government will be asking refiners, distributors, and retailers to come to Ottawa to appear before a Parliamentary Committee to explain their pricing methods to Canadians.  In addition to these meetings, officials from Industry Canada will engage international counterparts on this issue.

Our government remains concerned about fluctuating gas prices that are affecting Canadian consumers across the country.  We’ve already taken concrete action to protect consumers from paying more than they should at the gas station and continues to listen and act on the priorities of hardworking Canadian families.

The government passed the Fairness at the Pumps Act to protect consumers from paying more than they should at the gas station and other places where goods are measured, while ensuring court-imposed fines and a formal penalties system to back these fines up.  As well, our government expanded the powers of the commissioner of competition to better protect consumers from price fixing and fraud.

The economy will remain our #1 priority as we move forward with our mandate.  We’ve taken measures to help families cope with the global economic recession by implementing broad based tax cuts to keep taxes low for consumers and we will continue to unveil programs that will help families make ends meet.

With the strong governing mandate outlined in our election campaign, Canadian individuals, families and businesses can be assured that they are not only protected for the future, but they will also emerge from this period of global economic instability stronger than ever before.
