County Funds For Club

The Leduc Boys and Girls Club is looking for financial support from Leduc County before they consider adding user fees. During a presentation to council Oct. 13, Boys and Girls Club executive director Shawna Bissell asked council for financial support for the 17-20 Leduc County kids who access the Club’s services. “Financially, we’re in a much better position than we were but we need to be fiscally responsible,” she said.

Leduc County members make up about ten to twelve per cent of the Club’s membership annually. “It’s not a lot of kids, but it is kids who receive a valuable service from us.”

Currently, the City of Leduc provides $80,000 to the Club and provides pay-roll and bus maintenance services for the Club. City kids make up around 87 per cent of the Club’s membership. With a provincial grant and fund raising, the Club was able to recently purchase a new bus to transport kids to the facility at the Leduc Recreation Centre.

Bissell is asking for between $10,000 and $12,000 from the County based on numbers. Without County support, Bissell said they would have to look at alternative funding, which could include user fees for Leduc County residents. If money is not an option, Bissell also said they would be willing to look at more creative ways of financial support, like in-kind help similar to the City’s bus maintenance.

Council referred the request to its Budget meetings for consideration.
