Leduc RCMP are reminding motorists the protocol for passing emergency vehicles when they are at a scene after an Alberta Sheriff Highway Patrol vehicle was struck at the scene of an accident.
On Feb. 12, 2021 at approximately 9:00 a.m. members of the Leduc RCMP Integrated Traffic Unit were pm scene of a single vehicle collision on Highway 2 North at the 50 Avenue exit when the Sheriff vehicle with activated emergency lights was struck by a passing vehicle.
Poor road conditions were likely a factor and nobody was injured as a result of the collisions. However, RCMP are reminding motorists of the rules of the road when it comes to passing emergency vehicles with their lights on.
“First responders are in a high risk situation when they’re parked roadside, particularly when road and traffic conditions are treacherous” says Cst. Cheri-Lee Smith with Leduc RCMP. “Please give us room to work safely, so that we can continue to respond to future incidents requiring assistance.”
Motorists in the adjacent lane are reminded that they must slow down to 60 km per hour or less if the posted speed limit is lower when passing emergency vehicles or tow trucks stopped with their lights flashing.
Fines are doubled for failing to slow down for emergency vehicles or tow trucks parked roadside with emergency lights flashing. If you fail to yield to emergency vehicles with emergency lights and sirens engaged you could receive a fine and demerits.
