A national initiative, the Everybody Gets to Play program provides opportunities for people to join in recreation and athletic activities. Through the Everybody Gets to Play program, Leduc offers a number of incentive options, such as the Recreation Assistance Program, a subsidized membership to the Leduc Recreation Centre (LRC) for low income residents of any age. The membership includes drop-in fitness and recreation programs, public swimming, skating and other sport opportunities. Anyone who can demonstrate financial need is welcome to apply by filling out an application form for all family members. Application packages are available at the LRC and the Civic Centre in Leduc, or call 780-980-7125 for more information.
The MNP (Meyers Norris Penny) Kicks for Kids program is a drop-in opportunity for kids age 10 to 17, is held after school on Tuesdays and Thursdaysfrom 3:30 to 4:45, and offers a number of activities for staying active, such as indoor soccer, ball hockey, volleyball, lacrosse, and more. Admission is free, but space is limited to the field house capacity, so call 780-980-7120 for details.
The Leduc chapter of the Canadian Tire Jumpstart program offers organized sports and recreation activities for young people ages four to 18. Hockey, dance, soccer, and swimming are a few of the activities offered, intended to help youth develop positive self-image, social skills, and confidence. Healthy Hearts Leduc is a community initiative to foster healthy, active lifestyles in Leduc and surrounding area. Healthy Hearts is a partnership between Black Gold Regional Schools, St. Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic Schools, the University of Alberta, Alberta Health Services and the City of Leduc. At the November 9 Leduc City Council meeting, Canadian country music star, Brett Kissel, presented Mayor Greg Krischke with a cheque for $10,000, money raised at the Pics and Sticks charity hockey tournament where country music artists such as Kissel, Gord Bamford, and George Canyon, played a friendly game of hockey against ex-NHL players including Dave Semenko and Craig Simpson.
At the December 7 Spirit of Giving Luncheon, Richard Hobson, committee chair of the Capital Region Golf Tournament, presented Mayor Krischke with a cheque for $10,921 on behalf of the Everybody Gets to Play Leduc program. The contribution comes from proceeds raised at the Capital Region Golf Tournament hosted by Leduc on August 25.
The LRC is a world-class facility of over 300,000 square feet that opened its doors in the fall of 2009.
