A 26-year-old Red Deer man and a 28-year-old Maskwacis man have been charged with robbery, says Wetaskiwin RCMP.
Two suspects entered a Wetaskiwin liquor store on the night of Aug. 22. The suspects allegedly deployed bear spray in the cashier’s face and “stole multiple bottles of liquor” before fleeing the scene, said police.
A liquor store employee called 911 – Wetaskiwin RCMP and EMS responded to the call.
“The employee was treated for bear spray exposure, but was otherwise not injured,” police said in a media release on Sunday.
Video surveillance of the event was provided to the RCMP. Patrols were made, but the suspects were not located.
On Aug. 23, at approximately 1:20 p.m., officers located a vehicle that had a non-matching license plate. Police attempted to stop the vehicle, but it fled.
A short time later, the vehicle was located, with a collaborative effort from RCMP Police Dog Services, Wetaskiwin RCMP and Maskwacis RCMP.
Two men and one woman were arrested. Police said further investigation “was able to prove” that these were the men committed the robbery the day prior.
The 28-year-old Maskwacis resident has been charged with robbery with other offensive weapon and assault with weapon.
The 26-year-old Red Deer resident is facing a number of charges, including robbery with other offensive weapon, assault with weapon, weapons possession contrary to order, wearing a disguise with intent to commit offence, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and flight from peace officer.
Both males have been remanded into custody following a bail hearing.
