The Town of Millet accepted a deal with a resident to drop off his own weekly trash, after councilors discussed the issue at the regular council meeting May 23.

The town received a letter from resident Brian Doyle, who noted his garbage wasn’t being picked up on regular basis. “We place our garbage can out by the driveway by 1 p.m. on Fridays except when we are on holidays,” stated Doyle.

“Since the beginning of January the town staff has been able to pick up the garbage only about 60 to 70 per cent of the time. So about one-third of the time after 5 p.m. we know the staff is not coming so we place the garbage in the dumpster by the arena.

“The town staff is very busy, plus any unexpected event can arise, making it difficult for staff to pick up our garbage under our current arrangement.

“Therefore I wish to propose (we) haul our own garbage to the dumpster by the arena every Friday afternoon at one-half the cost of the regular fee.”

Town CAO Teri Pelletier said the Doyle residence is on the edge of town, and an arrangement was made because the garbage truck charged too much to go out there.

Mayor Tony Wadsworth said the Doyles are residents and are paying full price but not getting full service, so the proposal was a good idea. “I think it’s more than fair,” he said.

It was noted at the meeting that in the past the Doyles had requested to be annexed by the Town of Millet.

Councilors unanimously accepted Doyle’s proposal.
