A fire at the Maskwacis Health Centre has closed the building until crews can make repairs.
The facility had firefighters from Muskwachees Fire and Ambulance as well as Ermineskin Fire Rescue attend the scene around 10 a.m. on Sept. 5 after flames were noticed coming from part of the building.
According to a statement on the Maskwacis Health Services Facebook page, fire crews were able to contain the blaze to the cultural room in the Young Spirit Winds building. However, there was extensive smoke and water damage done to the facility that has forced the entire building to be closed.
A cause of the fire has yet to be released and it’s believed no one was injured as a result.
The statement also noted the restoration work at the facility is set to begin immediately, though it is expected programs and services will have to be moved for at least a week. The hope is that the building will return to normal function on Sept. 11.
In the meantime, Maskwacis Health Services adult pain clinic will be temporarily moving to the public health department.
Meanwhile, those needed any programs or assistance offered by Maskwacis Counselling and Support Services programming are urged to contact program manager Judy Littlechild at 780-335-3884. Anyone needing access to the mental health crisis team is asked to contact the Maskwacis Ambulance at 780-585-4001.
Further information will be provided when it becomes available.
