On Saturday, February 03, 2018 at approximately 10:30 a.m. Wetaskiwin RCMP members were dispatched to an armed robbery of a cab driver by a customer he had picked up.

A lone male struck the ditch and requested a ride by taxi to take the male to Red Deer. En route to Red Deer the male pointed a firearm at the driver in an attempt to rob him.

The driver of the cab returned the male to his vehicle and told him to “get out”. The male was able to free his vehicle and fled the area on Hwy 2A southbound from Wetaskiwin. He was apprehended a short distance away by Wetaskiwin RCMP and Maskwacis RCMP. The male was taken into custody without incident.

The male remains in custody with numerous charges including armed robbery, weapons offences, and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

Highway 2A was closed for a short period of time during the arrest of the accused.

The male could not be identified at the time of this release as charges were still pending.
