December 26, 1931 - August 29, 2022
Gordon Elmer Liske was born on December 26, 1931 in Wetaskiwin, Alberta to William and Emily Liske, and passed away on August 29, 2022 in Wetaskiwin, Alberta at the age of 90 years. Gordon was predeceased by his parents, William and Emily Liske, his brother Ken Liske, and his sister Erna Frieman. He leaves to mourn his wife Alene Liske, daughters Jody Liske, Laurie Schroder and Cindy Hinkey, his sister Ruby Warnke, and his brother Wilbert Liske. Also his grandchildren Chris Liske, Justin Schroder, Sarah Page, Aaron Hinkey, Joanna Hinkey and Elizabeth Kiely, and their children.
Gordon attended school at the Lone Ridge School, followed by continuing to help his Dad at the farm, and then starting road construction work. He met Alene Riley at a boarding house in Ponoka, while they were both working in that area, and they got married on Dec 17, 1957.
Gordon continued to do construction and seismic work during their first year of marriage, followed by farming for the rest of his life on the farm where he grew up, which he and his wife Alene bought from Gordon's parents over time. Gordon also participated in their travel agency of 33 years, Liske Travel Ltd, which also afforded him and his wife Alene the opportunity to travel the world. Gordon and Alene loved to dance, with square and round dancing being their specialty as part of the Wetaskiwin Square Dance Club.
Gordon was known as a very honest, wise, soft spoken, and fair man, always considering the needs of others before himself, and giving of himself freely, expecting nothing in return. Over the years Gordon served as Chairman on many boards in the community, and he also served as Executor for many estates in the Wetaskiwin area, at no charge. Gordon loved being outside with his cattle and in the field, and he continued to dream about that daily until the day he passed. His most favourite places to be were at the farm, as well as at his church home, originally Emmaus Lutheran Church in Brightview, Alberta, then Zion Lutheran Church in Wetaskiwin, followed by St. Peters Lutheran Church in Leduc.
Gordon had 8 amazing certified home health care workers who cared for him on shifts at the farm over the past 2 ½ years. All of these people became an important part of Gordon's family, and the love between him and them was strong. Gordon had a great sense of humour till the last few days before he passed, and every day was filled with joy, love, and fun. During the last 2 years of Gordon's life his most favourite thing to do was to go for drives in the countryside with his best buddy and care giver Abdullah, followed by them picking up hot chocolate for the road from Tim's. Abdullah was like a son to Gordon, and Gordon was like a father to Abdullah.
Gordon was a one-of-a-kind man that we all dearly loved, and we will all greatly miss. Life won't be the same without Gordon, but we do know we will be with him again when we are all with Jesus in Heaven.
A funeral service was held on Saturday, September 3, 2022 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Leduc, with interment at Emmaus Lutheran Church Cemetery, Brightview.
