Dear editor:
Just read your piece (Confederate flag means one thing, July 9 edition). Well written. Few probably understand what lies behind that symbol.
Perhaps if the carnage and disruption of that conflict were global, that flag would provoke the same reaction as another first seen in Europe in the 1930’s and 1940’s.
Still, ignorance of what lies behind the symbol being used is a sorry defense.
Wonder what the reaction would be if one painted whatever flag was used in the Riel rebellion? One could easily argue that they were rebels with a cause.
Wonder how many of us even know a bit of that “local” history vs. those people “who lived about 160 years ago on the other side of the continent.”
